Share the magnificent view from 3,776 meters above sea level! KDDI launches a 5G area at the top of Mt. Fuji

2021.09.24

To support the safe and secure climbing of Mt. Fuji through a comfortable communication environment, KDDI will provide 4G LTE at the trailhead and along the mountain climbing trail throughout the year. It also expanded 5G and 4G LTE coverage at the top of Mt. Fuji between early July and late August, within its opening season this year.

KDDI's subsidiary, Wire and Wireless (Wi2), will continue to provide Mount Fuji with a free Wi-Fi service. It has been offering this free service since 2016 during Mount Fuji's open season, from July to early September (within the operating periods of each mountain hut and facility), across 47 locations.

Last year, the mountain trails on Mt. Fuji were closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This year, however, the mountain was opened on July 1, with infection prevention measures taken, including the formulation of the "New manners for climbing Mt. Fuji in the age of living with COVID-19" so that people can climb Mt. Fuji with peace of mind.

Both the KDDI and Wi2 have implemented communication measures on mountain trails, summits, and mountain huts to coincide with the opening season from July to September every year since 2009. This year, as in the past, the company continued to support safe and secure mountain climbing by providing 4G LTE on mountain trails, around summits, and in mountain huts, to improve communication environments through the "Mt. Fuji Wi-Fi" service. Beyond this, through the installation of 5G at the top of Mt. Fuji this year, support will be provided to encourage friends and family who have been unable to go mountain climbing due to COVID-19 restrictions, to enjoy the beauty of Mt. Fuji. KDDI hopes that many climbers will be able to share and enjoy high-definition photographs and videos of the spectacular view from the summit of Mt. Fuji at 3,776 m.
