JFE Engineering and Tokyo Institute of Technology establish a collaborative research center to help contribute to realizing a carbon-neutral society

2022.08.24

On July 1, JFE Engineering Corporation and the Tokyo Institute of Technology opened the JFE Engineering Carbon Neutrality Collaborative Research Center (hereafter "CRC") at the Institute's Ookayama campus with support from the university's Open Innovation Platform. The CRC aims to promote new technologies to create a carbon-neutral society.

Prior to this, on June 29, an agreement signing ceremony for the establishment of the CRC was held in the presence of Hajime Oshita, President of JFE Engineering, and Kazuya Masu, President of Tokyo Institute of Technology.

By FY2030, JFE Engineering aims to help reduce CO2 by 25 million tons annually through expansions in renewable energy and the development of carbon recycling technologies. Meanwhile, the Tokyo Institute of Technology established the Laboratory for Zero-Carbon Energy in June 2021, aiming to build a prosperous society that coexists with the planet through innovative research and development of non-fossil energy (zero-carbon energy) and utilization systems.

The two groups held a series of discussions from 2021 to collaborate on developing technologies that will be useful for carbon neutrality, agreeing that a multilayered approach and innovation across a wide range of fields were necessary to realize a carbon-neutral society. They then agreed to collaborate comprehensively, transcending the boundaries of a typical individual joint research framework.

The two parties intend to contribute to realizing a carbon-neutral society in 2050 through developing technologies at the CRC.

[Overview of the CRC]

Close ongoing collaboration between researchers and engineers will help combine JFE Engineering's engineering technologies related to plant and infrastructure construction in the fields of energy and the environment with the Tokyo Institute of Technology's advanced academic knowledge in a wide range of fields. Thus, the center will promote the development of new technologies to help create a carbon-neutral society.
