Japan's iconic Mt. Fuji got its first snowcap of the season on Wednesday, the latest date on record following unusually warm weather.
The summit of the 3,776-meter mountain straddling Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures was covered with a thin layer of snow in the morning, a Kyodo News reporter confirmed from the Shizuoka side.

The Kofu observatory on the Yamanashi side, which announces snowcap observations every year for Japan's tallest mountain, has yet to confirm the snowfall due to cloud blocking the view.
Once confirmed by the observatory, the snowcap will officially beat the previous record of Oct. 26 in 1955 and 2016.
Warm weather had persisted in recent weeks, with the summit's average temperature standing at 1.6 C in October, the highest for the month since records began in 1932 and 3.6 C higher than in an average year.
