New subsea power cable monitoring system for offshore wind farms developed by Yokogawa Electric Corporation

On December 11, Yokogawa Electric Corporation released a new product, "OpreXTM Subsea Power Cable Monitoring," a system for monitoring the conditions of subsea power cables. The main target market for this product is the renewable energy sector, and it can be used for applications related to the monitoring of subsea power cables. The company aims to receive orders, including overseas orders, for 3 licenses, in FY2025, 5 licenses in FY2026, and 11 licenses in FY2027. The new product enables condition-based maintenance (CBM) by constantly monitoring the temperature rise of subsea cables caused by damage, thereby reducing operating costs, such as the expenses and labor required for inspection and maintenance.

Subsea power cables used in offshore wind farms fail and receive damage frequently due to natural disasters and accidents. In addition, when damaged, financial losses associated with not able to generate power are large, making regular inspection and maintenance even more important. Because theses cables are buried under the seafloor and span long distances, maintenance requires work vessels and divers as well as arrangements for their operation and work performance, incurring huge costs.
