The legislation allows the government to require businesses to cooperate in investigations into the misuse of AI but does not stipulate any penalties.
Under the new law, the government will be able to advise businesses about AI misuse and warn the public when cases are identified.
The legislation reflects global AI rulemaking efforts, with the European Union having enacted a comprehensive law in 2024.
A task force led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will be established to decide Japan's AI policy with guidelines to be compiled for companies and users.
