THE MAKING (328) How Bronze Statues are Made

THE MAKING follows the process of fabricating everyday products from raw materials. No.328 looks at the process of how bronze statues are made.

Models of the statues are made from oil clay by model-makers based on photographs and other materials. A cast mold made of resin is made from a plaster mold taken from the clay model. The casting mold is then hardened with casting sand to make a casting mold, which also contains a mold for the statue's cavity. When the copper alloy is heated to 1,200℃ and poured into the casting mold, a statue of the same shape as the clay prototype is produced.
